Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed. The disability system is too expensive, slow to work and impossibly hard for the families of disabled people to access quickly and easily. The key is the funding. With a National Disability Insurance Scheme all disabled people may be able to become, to some degree, independent and relatively care- free. That means that the carers/family members will be able to find respite and relief from arduous conditions of care and service.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• Better access to education and work opportunities

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services,
• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Employment support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the NDIS because it means a much more successful level of support and care for those who are disabled. A level of support which will enable the disabled to be more independent and happier because they are no longer in need of constant care from their own families.
