Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The Disability system would work for me by giving my mother much needed peace of mind for on going support and relief for the future of my special needs brother. Who will be turning 16 on the 10/1/2013. It will allow for better access to the type of support he is going to need as he is getting older and having to start making life decisions for him self to the limited ability he has. He will still need the support of my mother for a number of years to come and will need to stay under her direct care. The future access to better education and job opportunities is one of the things at the top of my mothers list to ensure a better future for my brother along with access to support services and on going transport to his current school and ongoing educational institutions. These are just some of the many needs my mother, brother and many others like her will need in this new scheme.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Better access to mainstream support and services,
  • Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support,
  • Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services,
  • Life-skills,
  • Support for families and carers

I support the introduction of the NDIS. because it will ensure the ongoing support and needs of all disabled persons no matter their need age gender or level of support needed under one umbrella and will bring together all the services that are already available; and will make clear what is needed.
