Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

My daugter became deaf/blind as an adult in 2008. There is NO support out there for anyone, could not get any attention from DSQ until someone from Endeavour guided us through what to do. There is no help in Qld for adult training for blind, let alonne deaf/blind. The only support for our family was through Endeavour caring for older carers, and a minimal fortnightly payment from Centrelink.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Better access to mainstream support and services
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
• Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications
• Education support (technology/services/equipment)
• Life-skills

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Hopefully it will give disabled people the ability to regain their lives and live life in a manner that they wish, not in a confined manner as per government restrictions. The most important thing will be to spend the money on the disabled, not on some warm and fuzzy stuff directed by government to employ people who will then vote for them in elections. I am not very confident that this will happen - I have alreaady seen advertising for a warm and fuzzy program for carers with funding provided by the scheme.
