Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I think we have more awareness of disability than in precious eras but we are still very shielded from the members of our communities who have physical and other disabilities. Our ignorance is a disservice to ourselves, but also to those who bear the difficulties of physical disabilities in their everyday life. I include of course the families of such people.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Better access to education and work opportunities,
• More opportunities to participate in the community,
• More rights for people with a disability

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Education support (technology/services/equipment),
• Employment support,
• In-home care and domestic assistance

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the scheme with full awareness of the possibility that I may myself, in my lifetime fall into any one of the disability categories. I include my family and friends in my concern to improve the present situation.
