ePlease consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I am concerned that 24(d) states “economic and social” - whereas it should read “economic or social”.

So, if someone is not capable of work due to disability, and providing assistance will not enable them to be capable, technically they are not covered by the NDIS. Same applies if they stop work at 60 instead of 65.

Also, where does education fit in for child too old for early intervention, technically school is not work, so any person beyond the age of early intervention who is studying full time does not qualify as both social and economic.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, More opportunities to participate in the community

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Positive behaviour support and psychological services, Interpreters and other communication support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I and my family need help both at work, and in study, and socially.
