Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I have seen at first hand the struggle that people have looking after their loved ones with a disability. I shared an office with “Parent to Parent” my sister-in-law looked after the profound children with a disability in a special home in the Blue Mountains. Why are they in a home because it is too much for the parents to look after them. I have seen friends push they husbands around in wheel chairs for years following they having strokes.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
• The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Flexible in- home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the NDIS because I have seen the hardships & worry in carry for their loved ones over a long term.
