Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have been bedridden with severe myalgic encephaloymeyelitis (ME) for 2 years now and my mother and brother do everything for me yet I cant get disability services in Queensland. My mother had to buy my oxygen generator that reduces my sensitivity to noise and reduces my nerve pain because I couldn’t get it through MASS as I had a 6 month wait to see a specialist who then said he wasnt an expert in ME.
I feel guilty because I can’t do anything for myself and my brother and mother cant get a break from caring for me.
I can’t get help with the medical consumables I need for my medical condition because they are not on the MASS list.
I don’t want to be sick I don’t want to be on welfare.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Support for families and carers,
- Accommodation options,
- In-home care and domestic assistance,
- Flexible in- home/outside home respite,
- Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
A fair go for all Australians regardless of where they live.
