Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
If you have a disability the cost of living increases substantially due to various need of each individual. There are still too many obstacles for the disabled in the transport area, i.e, public transport,moified taxi availabilty, homes services, health services the list goes on and on. We are so far behind world standards, its time the disabled had a fair go. I personally have found employment impossible. I have a great interview, but when I am truthful about my disabilities there is a change in attitude.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- Better access to education and work opportunities,
- More rights for people with a disability
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It gives hope for the disabled to receive services and support that are suitable to the individual. It also offers less red tape and/or negotiations for the people with equipment needs. It will give our disabled choice, dignity, hope, assistance. It will hopefully change the social attitudes that are quite negative and can be very hurtful. It will give rights, basic human rights to the disabled individual. It will improve Australia’s status in the world arena, we are far behind in our attitude.
