Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Comes from an incorrect and out of date paradigm that treats people with a dis- hability as being outside of the norm - the norm of having a happy, social, purpose filled life with the opportunity to be yourself as well as have and achieve goals. These are “higher” level needs that all human beings NEED. In a country like Australia we need to treat all people with the respect they are worth - we are all worth the same, and we all have something to contribute…be that a ability or disability. And it is currently very hard on the carers - they see all the judgement and carry a lot to help there loved one have the best chance of health and happiness. They really need support and longterm assistance. I feel that people in the system are trying to change things, but that have to battle an unhelpful and negative and discriminating system.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
• Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support,
• Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Education support (technology/services/equipment),
• Life-skills,
• Flexible in- home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Why wouldn’t I support it? Basic human rights 101.
