Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

The current disability system is not fair to families and people with disabilities. What isn’t working is the long wait lists and lottery style allocation of funding and programs to people who need assistance. Often people need to relinquish care or be in crisis before they can receive help instead of preventing crisis to occur.

Currently people do not get to choose who will assist them or their family and they have to put up with change in workers all the time and sometimes they won’t even know who it is that will be coming into their home.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Accommodation options,
• Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I support the NDIS as it means a fairer system with less waiting time for people with disabilities. It means that individuals will get the chance to choose what support they have and work towards their own goals. It means that people with disabilities and their families will have options and will no longer need to fit into the boxes that the service system has created for them.
