Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

Currently, too many different entities involved in being able to access/provide services for the disabled.

Would prefer a one-stop entity who would be able to support the needs of the disabled.

Guidelines to support all types of disability have not been firmly established.

Education about disability and the impact it has on individuals/family/carers is lacking.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
  • More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services,
  • Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
  • Employment support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

By understanding an individual’s needs. the NDIS will provide an important service in providing crucial support to disabled individuals irrespective of the level of their disability. It will establish the appropriate level of support - support being all aspects of physical, mental and health issues - and ensure that a system is put in place whereby carers can somewhat be relinquished of their roles with the implementation of an alternative system of care.

The NDIS will cooperate with peer support groups to establish proper guidelines and the appropriate level of support for the disabled irrespective of their level of disability - implement these so that a disabled individual can be afforded a life of dignity and respect.

An established NDIS will highlight a better understanding and wider acceptance by the general public.
