Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The present disability system is inadequate for my family as my 3 year old grandson, who was born 3 months prematurely, is in need of on-going therapy, equipment and care assistance to be able to reach his full potential with proper education and then as an adult become a wage earner one day. My older son and his wife are in need of NDIS to help him develop to the best of his ability.
Also, my other adult son is also in need of the re-assurance of on-going support as he suffers with a severe, chronic mental illness and would benefit from much more support living safely “in the community”, after spending 5 of his teenage years in Glenside Mental Hospital. The proper, Australia-wide implementation NDIS is necessary.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS because I see in my own family and the wider community the need for this to provide on-going assistance for families and individuals under great pressure to meet the daily demands which are part of living with disabilities.
