Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

As an Occupational Therapist working with people with disabilities I see some people having their needs met immediately which enables them to manage their lives, and others ‘stuck’ in a system fighting to ave their needs recognised. The injustice of this means to me that the current disability system does not work with fairness and equality.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
• More rights for people with a disability,
• People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Life-skills,
• Case management, planning and coordination

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Social justice for all people with disability no matter the cause of the disability. Every person has a right to achieve to their optimal capacity despite saving a disability. A disability should not prevent a person living their life as a person without a disability - the right to work, learn recreate and live with respect. I hope the NDIS assists people with disabilities achieving this.
