Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Under the present system accommodation, when it eventually becomes available, is allocated without the individual or their family having any choice.
When submissions are made for specific equipment needs there is an undue wait for approvals and subsequent supply.
Expensive transport needs have to be met by the individual’s family.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, People with disability can choose who comes into their home
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers, Accommodation options
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The scheme will allow the individual the chace to better choose accommodation options.
It should, to a large extent, relieve the financial burden on famalies in providing essential product and equipment needs - including transport costs.
It will eliminate the waiting time for approval of the provision of vital equipment and individual needs.
