Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Working at a physiotherapy clinic, I see many people struggling day to day, and it is made infinitely worse when they are constantly having to explain themselves and their situation, just to get access to the services and support that they require. I would like to see more support, and in general more respect given to these people. They should not have to fight constantly to be recognised and supported.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
- Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Employment support,
- Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I believe that at present, there is not enough support or respect given to people living with disabilities. There must be ongoing, positive support for all people to eensure they live the lives that they want to - as independent, respected members of society, no matter where they live. This means cutting the red tape to allow them access to the services they need, ensuring that workplaces, public places and transport are designed and equipped to allow all people access without fuss or concern. I believe that the NDIS can be a step in the right direction.
