Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I get tired of the perception that seems to be around in the current support system, ie companies and individuals supplying respite and other related services, than if this isn’t good enough for you (whatever services are provided), then tough luck. The perception appears to be that you don’t deserve any more than very average or poor service, simply because of the situation you are in. Never mind that (in just about all cases) it was never your fault (disabled and carer) that you are in the situation you are in.

There has to be a better way, that enables primary carers and the disabled to better control what services they can employ and how those services are employed.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

• People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
• People with disability can choose who comes into their home,
• People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

• Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
• Support for families and carers,
• Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because it has to be an improvement on the current mish-mash of a system.
