Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I dont have a child with a disability but know a number of friends who do. I cannot believe the pressure and burden that is placed on families that have to care for their loved ones with insufficient financial or structural support services. Also for those with disabilities there is not enough training and education for them in order to make a contribution to the economy and provide self esteem in that endeavor.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Better access to education and work opportunities,
  • People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
  • Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Education support (technology/services/equipment),
  • Support for families and carers,
  • Accommodation options

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because nearly 20% of Australia’s population and their families are the most disadvantaged regarding support services, education and independent accommodation. By providing support and education both the disabled and their families will be in a stronger position to contribute to the economy and be proud of their efforts. It is an unfair burden on families and those who have special needs in the current environment and we all as a nation must immediate address and fully fund a NDIS with unqualified and bipartisan support. This is a great reform that needs careful planning and implementation.
