Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I have a considerable amount of expenses that are not covered for medication I am unable to access equipment I need without considerable cost to myself I make the choice to work so I can support myself and am not a financial burden on society, but I do not get support from the government and I feel that I would get more support if I chose not to work and was on a disability pension

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Removal of age barriers to services for children

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Flexible in-home/outside home respite

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because it is not fair that people who have disabilities are not able to access the support they need Because early intervention is vital and will save the community money in the long run as people with disabilities will be more independent and functional members of the community Because people with disabilities deserve to learn and develop as other people do

  • this will ensure they are able to live lives with dignity Because people with disabilities deserve respect and the ability to reach their full potential Because it is not fair that because of a genetic lottery, some families and individuals are faced with considerable expenses just to get through each day (medication/therapy/equipment)
