Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The waiting list is crazy and when u do get to the top of the list there is still huge gap payments. Our child has not received OT services for almost 12 months now as funding ran out and we can not afford it. Respite is so expensive that mostly we just don’t bother anymore. We have a small state level package but even that only covers a whole 3 hours a week respite. Hardly enough to meet the needs of a child needing around the clock care
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- People with a disability can choose the types of support to use
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Equipment and home/vehicle modifications,
- Recreation and community access,
- Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because with two children with disabilities then burden in our family is huge, the government currently only pays a small amount though carers allowance, not even enough to cover their medications. I can not work due to their disability so am left to live below the poverty line whilst trying to meet their growing needs, it is almost impossible to do. The government needs to realise we are saving them hundreds of thousands of dollars a year by caring for our children and not giving them over to the state. Yet we are paid peanuts to meet their needs. Just doesn’t seem fair.
