Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have three autistic children and only receive services for one of them. Though this does help the family a little it does still cause strain as the other young adults need supports and community access also without there more severely gallenged younger sibling making family activities and community access difficult at times.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
- Ensure support and equipment is available when needed,
- People with a disability can choose the types of support to use,
- People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
- Removal of age barriers to services for children,
- People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
- Therapy and allied health services,
- Support for families and carers,
- In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I have been a Carer for 18 yrs I have seen support come and go in my home, support for one never been offered though applied for. Constantly struggling myself and also running an autistic carers support group watching other families struggle with there parenting and caring roles with little to no support.
