Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I have a son with Aspergers Syndome and its difficult finding places for him to go in the school holidays so that I can get some respite. He needs more funding under his verification for help at school so that he can have more one on one help.

I have a sister who has a son aged 30 with schizophrenia who is psychotic and a husband with brian damage from a heart attack. Both are on disability pensions and she gets little help from the government whilst trying to run the family business. she needs funding for respite, be paid to be their carer, and assistance so that the sone can live independantly with help with rental assistance, mental health management plan.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

  • Better access to mainstream support and services,
  • Better access to education and work opportunities,
  • More opportunities to participate in the community,
  • More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare,
  • More rights for people with a disability,
  • People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams,
  • The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person,
  • People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

  • Life-skills,
  • Employment support,
  • Support for families and carers,
  • Accommodation options,
  • Case management, planning and coordination,
  • Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

I think people with a disability need more support to live functioning lives. The better they function the less they cost so its an economic plus to support them more. Their families need more support in terms of carrers assistance, respite, professional help. Again the more help they get the less fallout cost in the family.
