Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
In home support and occassional respite is not enough as my son has been on the departments register for over 10 years now for full time accommodation and support which is what our family desperately need.
We need to have something done in order for our family to live productive lives without the continual stress of caring for our son.
I have seen the elderly with their adult children still at home and having to care for their high support needs. I do not want to be in that situation!!! My health is suffering from the daily stress of caring for my sons needs.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, Accommodation options, Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
To support all the forgotten members of our society the disability sector.
