Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have injured myself waiting on long lists for equipment. The child in my care has endured fractures due to inadequate slings. Waiting for repairs takes a long time even when it comes to hoists. Her wheelchair Matrix Back is still not fitted to mould her back after a spinal operation therefore her shoulder blade has not set in the correct place.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, Better access to mainstream support and services, More rights for people with a disability
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers, In home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It is a much better system overall for all types of needs for the disabled no matter how high or low the level of care. People able to make choices for them selves have much more resources.
The NDIS may help parents care for their own children rather than have to give their children up to be raised by strangers.
