Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
As the primary care giver of a family member with aquired brain damage, I am at a loss to find suitable supported accomodation for my brother.
As his condition deteriorates I will be forced to put into an aged care facility.
More support and assistance is required to help stay at home and maintain some level of independence.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, More opportunities to participate in the community, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Recreation and community access, Accommodation options, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
With the right services in place people with a disability can live in the community and be close to their family and lots of money will be saved in the long term on high need services, if there is better infra structure put in place now.
That’s a win-win for families of disabled people and for the Government budget.
