Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
With the pension we get [carer& disability] we barely keep our heads above water,and it seems that the dollar is more important than the PATIENT .We are older folk staying at home doing our bit to keep out of hospital. My wife has been wheelchair bound since 2000,and it has been a struggle from day one,eg hoist in van has broken down and there is no assistance from govt to have it repaired. We hear a lot of your doing a good job from federal govt ,but Im afraid that dos,nt help us.Just think to yourself saving what you can for a good break and then having to spend it on repairs.We have got use to staying at home just because there is no assistance to really do things. We are on a package and our providers are always fighting to keep in budget,this should not happen the cost to have your patient at home is very minimal compared to hospital.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers, In home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the sheme just because it makes sense in every way.
