Lack of respite and limited peer support outings for young adults

From: To: Community Affairs, Committee (SEN); Subject: Submission to the Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012 Date: Friday, 21 December 2012 5:51:30 PM

Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing

Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance

Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

As we have not reached the age of 60 there is no overnight respite in the Southern Area health service. We have to travel to Nowra which is a 2 hour drive away then back again for 2 nights then up and back again for a 4 hour drive.

There are not enough peer support outings on weekends for our young adults and they take up so much of there funding they only get a few a year anyway.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

Recreation and community access, Flexible in-home/outside home respite, Crisis and emergency support

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because our son in now 21 years old and we have struggled all those years with hardly any out of home respite. There needs to be more funding for them to be able to attend many more outings and events in the community. The scheme would help all those families out there who are at home, stuck as we the parents have no life as we need to care for our son or daughter.

I agree for my submission to be made public
