Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My brother (now deceased) lived at home with my parents until he was over 50yo and my parents were no longer able to manage him. They only once placed him in institutional care so they could enjoy a week’s holiday in Adelaide and he had a fall in the bathroom and broke his collarbone. That was their first and last holiday together in 50 years until they finally agreed for him to go to Beechworth. My brother and my parents deserved better care and more dignity.
I know things are better now but I witnessed the effect on my brother, my parents and my self and sister and that is why I am a whole hearted supporter
for the National Disability Insurance Scheme
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, Accommodation options, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
As a first world democracy Australia has an obligation to care for those less fortunate in our community.Recent changes have brought the lives of these people out from behind closed doors but that os only the start of remedy. Now we need to grant real equality to these people and remove the burden of sole care from “the carers” by offering every assistance. Too many have suffered in silence for too long, Australians want to do it better.
