Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
System is too fragmented and unreliable, leaving gaps especially for people not covered by existing workers’ compensation or other personal injury insurance. The system is also not flexible enough for people who have disabilities with variable levels of functioning, such as cyclical mental health issues.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Better access to education and work opportunities, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Education support (technology/services/equipment), Employment support, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the scheme because it goes some way towards ensuring increased participation opportunities for people with disability. It makes good economic and social sense to have all members of our society participating in employment and community. This type of vocational and social participation has been demonstrated to be a key factor in long-term health outcomes.
