Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Having become disabled rather than being born disabled the amount of benefits is ludicrous even compared to unemployment benefits and cannot support my family to the appropriate level. And no financial support is available to start a business appropriate to my disability and skills.
There is no support for respite for my carer (wife) either from me or family duties so is filled with duties 24/7/365 nobody else I know of on the planet is required to dedicate as much workload as that.
I am unable to make decisions for myself personally about my treatment options and how I interact with the community through restrictions on equipment (eg electrical mobility devices), and other resources either being unavailable or inconvenient.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The NDIS should be a scheme for those with disabilities by people who have disabilities electing what type of support, therapy and equipment helps them to lead lives that are meaningful and fruitful.
