Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
It doesn’t work for us, because, My Daughter has a BLOCK FUNDED arrangement with an unsuitable Lifestyle support service. Although, after much vigorous advocating, Disability services has agreed to release it to a better suited service, we have found out it is not adequate to provide the services she needs. She is being held hostage by these outdated rules. My daughter is 26 years old and she has no say in her living arrangements.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Accommodation options, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS because I hope it will offer choice and help in decision making to the families and people with disabilities.
