Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The multiplicity of agencies offering support can be very confusing for those requiring assistance. In recent years my late wife was severely affected by MS, and I was sole carer. This was fine until I injured my leg, which required meals on wheels, community nursing care, and at the time it was very difficult to obtain the necessary information from the various providers. The services provided were excellent, once you negotiated the process.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I believe the scheme will make services available to all who require them regardless of their financial position.
