Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The type of equipment needed not always available, except at high personal cost, not always affordable. Even those with disability would prefer employment they can manage, rather than total dependence on “charity”. The persoal care needs, eg help with showering & dressing, even if supplied by aid organisations, are at moment quite unreliable re reasonable hours, forcing recipient to remain in night clothes till unsuitable hour of day.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Life-skills, Accommodation options
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Many people cannot afford the costs of the support & care needed, even if it is available. There are also huge gaps in availability. Young disabled people are at special disadvantage at moment if needing residential care, being forced into aged facilities unsuitable for this age group. Private carers are over-taxed at moment, & receive totally insufficient support or relief.
