Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
We need to ensure that all people with disabilities get access to necessary equipment and services to enable them to live in their own homes and where possible continue their education or employment.
My cousin recently became a partial quadraplegic and was discharged from hospital with out access to necessary equipment and no services because the house needed modifications to make it safe for carers to access.
Although it was great that he was able to return to his school which would have benifited him emensly, the lack of support led to extreme carers stress and family break down.
The Disability system needs to provide care for these vunerable people, no matter what the family financial support is
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers, Accommodation options
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
To try to get help to those who need it no matter what the disabiliy is, We need to look at every person as an individual and provide services and support on an individual basis.
