Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Getting in home carer support is difficult. If you have your disabled adult at home with you still, organisations that provide carers seem to put you in a too hard basket and find it difficult to provide for the hours available.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with disability can choose who comes into their home, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Support for families and carers, Accommodation options, Flexible in-home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It will provide a more balanced and a right to access services that able bodied Australians take for granted. Hopefully it will provide some regulation to companies/organisations that provide services to people and families of disabilities so that they can’t rip us off.
