Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My aunty has had to advocate on behalf of my cousin her entire life taking time away from personal and career pursuits. She and my uncle have also had to provide for their son in many ways providing material support resources which have cost a lot of money. They are “penalized” for having a disabled son.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I believe each and every person in Australia have the quality of life they desire and pursue. This is much more difficult for those with a disability if they do not have family to support them with time, resources and finances.
