Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My name is Maree Ireland. I have been receiving disability supports since the mid 90’s. This has enabled me to live in the community which overall has been great.
However there have been some issues and shortfalls such as;
lack of appropriate support workers; shifts not being filled lack of funding to cover my supports needs and aspirations
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Better access to education and work opportunities, More opportunities to participate in the community, More rights for people with a disability
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Employment support, In-home care and domestic assistance, Positive behaviour support and psychological services
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS(in the hope that it will eventuate as promised) because
it will provide disability support to people with disability and families in and timely manner as a an entitlement rather than in a charitable and ad hoc fashion.
Hopefully it will make the general public more aware of what is actually needed, both financially and practically, to assist people with disabilities and supporters to have a satisfying and productive life
