Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My daughter is profoundly disabled yet unable to access most services as she is undiagnosed. We are stuck in the public paed neurology system. If there were more options for private paediatric neurology we would feel much more supported in regards to her medical issues but still highly unlikely we would have a diagnosis for her.
There are many young children who fall into this category. Huge deficits in their functioning, yet medical technology isn’t yet at a place where they can diagnose what is wrong therefore the patients missing out on services.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, Better access to education and work opportunities, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Accommodation options, In-home care and domestic assistance, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It has the potential to change lives for the better.
