Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The people don’t have thier needs looked at on a personal level & changes need to be made to suit individual cases. Just because someone is diagnosed with a certain disability, doesn’t mean they should be lumped into a severe or non severe case folder and have resources allocated to suit that criteria. The NDIS will promote resources and assistance driven to help individuals achieve thier own goals, whether its a high school student needing assistance in class to get his hsc or installing ramps through an individuals new home. The need for treatment and support vary more than what the current system allows for and the NDIS will make it easier for people with disabilities to recieve what they need depending on thier individual wants & needs.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Life-skills, Support for families and carers, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
As the campaign slogan says it will “revolutionise” the way support and assistance is given to people with disabilities. Having had a childhood around people with disabilities it became clear that treatment was to general and that individuals could achieve so much more if the resources they needed were given to them. The NDIS is something australia has need for a long time and to see it come into fruition is wonderful
