Experiences with Bipolar and support services

From: To: Community Affairs, Committee (SEN); Subject: Submission to the Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance Scheme Bill 2012 Date: Friday, 21 December 2012 6:10:38 PM

Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing

Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance

Scheme Bill 2012.

The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.

I have had Bipolar from birth. For many Years my disability was keep from me . which made life very difficult. I did not understand why it was hard for me to work .It was many years before I understand it all. If I can say is we need to be told the truth. By Doctors and Parent’s who are looking after Us. As a woman in my middle 50’s the past 20 yrs I am married to a man who fully supports me and become my full time carer 6yrs ago. We live on a full pension that helps us. The only short comings is there not much services in my area for people in my age group with Bipolar.

The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:

People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Better access to mainstream support and services, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support

The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:

Recreation and community access, Support for families and carers, Positive behaviour support and psychological services

I support the introduction of the NDIS.

Because for many years we have been the silent people in this country who have not had respect given to us. For many years people was told we can not live a full life. I know many of Us need cares for the rest of lifes the National Disability Insurance Scheme will help the cost of care for many people in years to come.

I agree for my submission to be made public

Regards,

Mrs Carol Carol L Nichol
