Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
It is currently means tested, which means I am not able to access services that my daughter needs because I do not qualify for sufficient funding. I am not eligible to receive a pension or carers payment because I earn too much. There is a severe shortage of resources (staff, respite places, therapists/support services). The waiting lists are far too long and by the time I get to the top of the list I no longer need that particular service, or my daughter is outside the age bracket.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Recreation and community access, Flexible in home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I am hoping it will give us the flexibility that we need to access the services that my daughter needs without compromising her quality of life or my personal life.
