Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
Our daughter has Autism and the FaHCSIA Early Intervention Funding expired when she turned 7. The Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy services we access to support her we now have to fund. We will continue to do so, however it would be easier if this or another source of funding continued beyond age 7. There also needs to be greater clarity around what is available for people with a disability and their families rather than having to seek out information from different departments / NGO’s.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Life-skills, Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The NDIS will allow people with a disability and their families to get the support they need when they want / need it. It will also enable them to access support and services that are tailored to them rather than the current system which is more a one size fits all model. Properly implemented and funded, the NDIS will ensure people with a disability can live a good life throughout their lifespan. The time for this is now.
