Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My family (thankfully) are not affected but I see friends and acquaintances who struggle to get the help and services they need for physically or mentally disabled family members. There seems to be little coordination between services and these parents who are already shouldering the great burden of looking after their loved ones seem to also have to do all the homework themselves to find out what is available, then to fund raise endlessly in order to get the things they need. They must constantly find new strengths within to keep going and have little respite. People like these are not being treated as equals in our society. If they had a specific physical disease they would be treated by doctors and be given the help and medication they need. Why on earth do we discriminate like this?
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, The ability to receive services when needed and in the way that suits the person, People with disability/family will influence the types of support and services offered
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because I see friends struggle and having to fight tooth and nail for every tiny bit of help and support that should be freely available.
