Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
I have concerns for individuals with cognitive disabilities who have no reliable family or community support to be able to adequately access services that meet their needs. I also feel that the disability sector is a quagmire of services that are not easily understood or accessed and hold concerns about how people will be assisted to navigate this complex area. I also worry that the unmet needs within the disability sector are so enormous that meeting all these needs will be seen as an excuse not to adequately fund the National Disability Insurance Scheme. I also feel that there is much more empahisis on the work “dis” than “ability”. If we could focus on the abilities of all we may be provided with the opportunity to enrich our great nation whilst emracing the skills of all our country men and women.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Life-skills, Recreation and community access, In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It has the potential to provde adequate support and services for all Australians regardless of ability. I envisage people with physical disability being in a position where they are genuine in control of their lives, not waiting days for a shower, or being in a position where they end up eating meals their carer is willing to provide.
