Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My 4 year old daughter has 3 rare syndromes that dont fit in the conventional list of disabilities that enable us to access funding. It is degenerative and this is getting harder as she gets bigger.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Better access to mainstream support and services, Minimising the number of times people have to tell their story in order to get support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Case management, planning and coordination
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
The current system (Child State Development Centre) has unacceptable waiting times for early intervention (eg speech therapy 13 months at Andrea Way, our local catchment zone). We are not eligable for Disability Services as my daughter, although having 3 syndromes that fucntionally affects her life every day, does not qualify as she doesn’t have an intelectual disability or autism. The system is very unfair as it allocates funds to some disabilities and not others.
