Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The current system is too fragmented and hard to navigate, with an NDIS the rights of people with disabilities will be the same as everyone else in the community.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Recreation and community access, Support for families and carers
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I wish to lodge my thoughts on the NDIS from two perspectives, one as the Manager of a service which provides Community Transport to the disabled people of Sutherland Shire. I see the daily effects for people with diabilities and the effects on their family and the wider community. At the moment there is a great variety of services available, however, all are dependent on the basis of the reason for the disability not the outcome.
I also wish to note my personal reasons for wishing for a NDIS to become a reality, my husband has multiple disabilities as a result of various work related and motor vehicle incidents, and my nephew was born with moderate disabilities, all of these are getting worse as the family members age and a scheme such as the NDIS may benefit these family members in the future.
