Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
No access to public transport, no ‘back-up’ plan when things go wrong, no support for the entire family, limited access to essential services.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, People with a disability can plan their lives and pursue their goals and dreams, Increased ability to coordinate services to suit the “whole” person/family
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Employment support, Support for families and carers, Crisis and emergency support
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
As a person who lives with a person with a disability, as well as who works in the industry, I understand how vital it is to have access to essential services. Having a national scheme will cut the red tape and provide support to each person with a disability, regardless of financial status, socio-economics, and race. I applaud the government for taking action on something which has fallen through the gaps for so many years.
