Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The disability system does not work for my family as it has now been a 5 month wait for a second hand wheelchair for my husband. The extremely long wait just to get on the register to be assessed for things like an ISP from the government. The endless amount of paperwork that is required by all agencies - all asking exactly the same questions, a central register with this information would be a wonderful idea.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Less red tape, with planning done locally by people who know their community
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Equipment and home/vehicle modifications, Support for families and carers, In home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
I support the NDIS as there needs to be change for those people living with disability, their families and carers.
