Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
-It is too hard for a disabled person to access. My son with Downs syndrome has to go and continually prove that his chromosomes haven’t changed over the course of the past years. -He is incapable of completing the paperwork and navigating the system to see what he is entitled to receive. -It gives him very little in the way of medical benefits for the variety of minor assistances he needs such as podiatry to cut his toenails, and provide orthotics. -He cannot stay on the family health plan after age 25 and there is no plan that he can afford on a disability pension so therefore cannot access a specialists care.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
People with a disability can choose the types of support to use, Removal of age barriers to services for children, Older parents and families will not worry what happens when they can no longer provide support
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Accommodation options, In-home care and domestic assistance
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
Because it is a necessity for families who have had to spend their whole life devoted to planning how their, now adult child with disability, will survive when they are no longer there to navigate the bureaucratic minefield that currently exists. \We need the help and assistance desperately it is too much of a family burden to impose on parents for a lifetime of care that they have given an are now at the age where they cannot continue to do so.
