Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
The minimal skills required for disability support staff lead to a sub-optimal standard of service. This is a major disadvantage to people with disabilities and can often involve breaches of human rights.
There are many cases cited where these breaches occur. By providing a better standard of education to workers while having higher expectations of them would reduce the incidence of abuses and provide a high quality of service. People deserve this.
Disability is an isolated sector that is fraught with archaic traditional practices and needs to be part of the mainstream suite of services and activities.
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Ensure support and equipment is available when needed, Better access to mainstream support and services, More employment of people with disability and less reliance on social welfare
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Therapy and allied health services, Support for families and carers, Flexible in home/outside home respite
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
It provides a choice for people who have previously been at the mercy of disability services and sometimes even carers and/or families. It gives people a voice and a choice.
