Please consider this email a formal submission by me to the Senate Standing
Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into the National Disability Insurance
Scheme Bill 2012.
The current disability system has many problems that need to be addressed.
My son has autism and being a parent with two children one who has a disability while trying to juggle work can be very exhausting, I feel that due to my sons disability he not i really get a choice about his education and the options he has unless we look for a private school, the department may deem my poor child who cannot with more than 3 people around him shoved into a class of 30 kids and because individual support has been scrapped will be left to struggle it out and most likely fall through the cracks. Personally I feel this is completely unacceptable as education is paramount in every child’s life, it would make everyone lives a lot easier if discussion between the department and the families were met at a compromise and the too negotiated three school were looked at for enrolment, another issue I have is that there is no financial support once a child turns seven yet no scientific research to state that therapy doesn’t help once this age is reached? There are countl ess pints of poor families who are having to stop therapies for their disabled child who severely need it to help them progress and learn, no support for them one they reach working age?!? I could continue but feel enough is said… A change needs to be made!
The main features of the NDIS that will make a difference to the community are:
Better access to education and work opportunities, More rights for people with a disability, Removal of age barriers to services for children
The most important services for the NDIS to provide are:
Education support (technology/services/equipment), Life-skills, Recreation and community access
I support the introduction of the NDIS.
As stated above a change needs to be made and if its in the form of the ndis scheme then I praise it!!! These people deserve the best of the best because they struggle in so many ways, instead of continuing to push these amazing people aside let’s raise them up with education and support and give these individuals the opportunity to reach their full potential
